FUSE for macOS overview
FUSE for macOS (was OSXFUSE) allows you to extend OS X's native file-handling capabilities via third-party file systems. It is a successor to MacFUSE, which is no longer being maintained.
As a user, installing the FUSE for macOS software package will let you use any third-party file system written atop FUSE for macOS or MacFUSE, if you choose to install the MacFUSE compatibility layer. As a developer, you can use the FUSE for macOS SDK to write numerous types of file systems as regular user-space programs. The content of these file systems can come from anywhere: from the local disk, from across the network, from memory, or any other combination of sources.
This package will install the runtime and development components of FUSE for macOS. Please note that no FUSE for macOS-based file systems are included in this package.
What's new in version 4.8.3
- Fix race condition in macFUSE.framework that was introduced in version 4.8.2. The race condition can be triggered by removing items from a directory while listing the directory's contents. This can lead to a segmentation fault.
- Improve fault tolerance of installer and uninstaller. There are documented cases of pkgutil(1) returning invalid version numbers for installed packages. This could result in issues when installing macFUSE updates or running the uninstaller.
- Work around a bug in xcodebuild resulting in SDKs being listed twice.

DO NOT INSTALL unless you really really really need to. WHY? Because this is by my personal estimation a vastly buggy POS. I call it HEADACHEWARE. I installed it because Cryptomator wants to use it. Tough luck! I've UNINSTALLED it! Fortunately, it comes with an uninstaller app. UNfortunately, the "uninstaller" does NOT install all of it! [expletive!] AND the stupid uninstaller doesn't tell you that you have to RESTART to get it out of RAM. - - A partial list of PITA LEFTOVERS: (1) /Library/StatedExtensions/Library/Filesystems/macfuse.fs <--Root permissions required to kill it. Have fun. (2) /private/var/db/KernelExtensionManagement/AuxKC/CurrentAuxKC/StashedExtensions/CE792BFB-8378-4355-82A9-162203510FA4/macfuse.kext <--Root. (3) /Library/Filesystems/strongfuse.fs <--Admin trashable. - - WHY do I extremely dislike this monster? It requires TWO RESTARTS to finish installing it, only to discover it has wrecked the system such that several errors are thrown, and several app permissions appear to have been damaged. (o_0) Ouch! You have to RESTART a THIRD TIME to clear the chaos. - - Oh and of course, as I mentioned above, you have to RESTART after UNinstalling to clear the FUSE crap out of memory. - - AVOID! Maybe they'll fix it, but not today.

NOT for M1 Macs! I don't care what the developer notes say. FUSE is INERT on M1 Macs. I've been through this twice now. NO, it's NOT compatible with M1 Macs. All you find it does is seriously screw up your system boot then NOT work. Don't install it. Ignore it. I don't say this often but: The developers seriously screwed up and have NOT properly tested 4.1.2 on M1 Macs. /rant
